Help Me Understand: How Did This Get In My Shoe? Now What?

Recently, on a training run for the Chicago Marathon, I noticed I was having a strange issue; a pain in my left foot. Ok, not really in the foot, but underneath my foot.

For some reason, in the midst of my run, something got into my shoe. How in the world does this happen?! I never stopped and took my shoes off. I was just running, and suddenly, “The Annoyance Fairy” dropped some annoyance into my shoe.

Instead of me stopping and taking my show off to see what annoying thing was in there, I just tried to deal with it. (insert clip of Ain’t Nothin’ Gonna Break My Stride) Maybe I was being stubborn, but I just didn’t want to stop. (can you relate?)

So, I pushed my way through the run. And let me tell ya, each step was very uncomfortable. But did I stop? Noooooooo! I mean, what happens if, “The Annoyance Fairy” visits during the Chicago Marathon? I’ve gotta prepare, right?

Well, after my run ended, I immediately took off my shoe to see the “little present” that fairy placed in my shoe.

Weighing in at a whopping 0.003 ounces, I was touched by, “The Pebble Fairy”. Seriously? That little pebble caused that much discomfort?

Hmmm. Makes you wonder, what other “small things” in life, that you think you can just deal with, are actually causing great discomfort?

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

Help Me Understand: Why Are We So Busy

Doesn’t it feel like when you ask someone how they’re doing they almost always say, “Oh I’m good. Bust busy. ” i feel like people almost see “busy” as a badge of honor?

I will admit, when I look at my schedule, my calendar had a tendency to get full in a hurry. I’m not proud of that. It’s simply the demands of family and life.

The other day, I was out for a training run in preparation for the Chicago Marathon. I was pounding out the miles when I noticed a man walking with his head down. “Hello”, as I took a deep breath and passed him. He smiled and kept walking. His face looked familiar, but I couldn’t place it. As I kept running, the image of him kept going through my mind, “How do I know him?!” “Eh. If that’s who I think it is, he will think I’m crazy for stopping to say something. “

Let me rewind to 6 weeks prior to this encounter. I was at a visitation for a woman who had been battling a terrible disease. I was introduced to a kind, gentle man with a calm demeanor. He was quite shy, but thankful my wife and I came to pay our respects for his loss. He is the dad to a good friend of mine.

This is why he looked so familiar to me. He was the man who just recently lost his wife.

After finally putting all of the pieces together, I turned around and introduced myself. He couldn’t remember where he knew me from. After a brief conversation, it all came back to him. I simply said, “I’m sorry for your loss. And I want you to know that I have been keeping your family in prayer”. He smiled, nodded, and said, “thank you”.

That brief 30 seconds truly made an impact on me. What if I didn’t stop? What if I simply went along with my business in “training mode”.

I almost missed an incredible blessing to not only say hello but to encourage a man feeling the sting of losing his wife.

Help me understand why we are so busy that our schedule is always much more important than anything else?

Help Me Understand…

There are plenty of things in life that need some extra explanation. Like, “Why do Cheez-Itz have a hole in each of them?” “Why do some people despise dipping their fries in a Frosty?” Or, “Why do people seem to despise Nickelback?”

I’m beginning a new series to help break down things in life that seem difficult to understand. Today, I’m beginning with a Bible verse in Romans. It says this, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

Whew! That’s a deep one, huh? Let me try and break that down for you with some help from, “Optimus Prime and the Autobots”. Also knows as “Transformers”.

You might remember the jingle from the 80’s, “Transformers More than meets the eye. Transformers robots in disguise“. The transformers toy looked like a car, but with some twisting and reshaping, it turned into something completely different, like a robot!

In this Bible verse about “not conforming to the pattern of this world,” Paul is warning Jesus followers to be careful not to fall into “worldly” thinking. But, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Think of the “renewing your mind” like a Transformer. With the Holy Spirits reshaping and molding, your mind is transformed and becomes something completely different. It turns into a mind like Jesus. A mind that is different than the world thinks.

At one time in the life of the Apostle Paul, he was convinced that followers of Jesus should be killed. But, after he had a personal life-changing encounter with Jesus, he began to follow Him. What he used to think was bad, (following Jesus) suddenly was good. And, what he used to enjoy, (killing Jesus followers) became a bad idea. His mind was transformed.

I bet you never thought that Optimus Prime and the Bible would ever be mentioned in the same blog, did you? Anyway, I hope this helps you understand.

Be transformed. Go make a difference. Always run by faith.

There Are Still Good People In The World

The other day, one of my boys, Sammy, called me with a frantic voice, “Dad, I need your help”. He had just come to a complete stop, turned, and the car hit some loose gravel which caused him to hit the guardrail.

Fortunately, this happened near a gas station. He was able to drive it to their parking and assess the damage. Not pretty. He went inside to tell the attendant that he would be leaving his car there until a wrecker came by. The attendant said, “Let me call my Uncle and see if he can help you”.

After 10 minutes this man pulled up to help my son. He spent several minutes trying to get the fender away from the tire so that it was “drive-able” to get back home. This man didn’t ask for money. Didn’t ask for a thank you, he just did it out of the kindness of his heart.

Another thing that made this so special, was that the man was deaf. He did his best to communicate with us by reading lips, and our body language. I was touched by his generosity.

Sure is good to see that there are still good people in this world. It reminds me of Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Share goodness. Go make a difference. Always Run By Faith.

It Hurts Like Crazy, But Needs To Happen

I thought it was just going to be a “simple” half marathon. But why was I in so much pain?!

I’ve run over 15 half marathons. Some I’ve raced to get a Personal Record (PR), and some were “just for fun.” Some take a lot more effort. I recently competed one where I simply went out for a “long run” that just happened to be 13.1 miles. But this felt different.

As I crossed the finish line, surrounded by cheers and my medal, I instantly felt a pain in my right leg. I remember thinking, “Well, that’s odd.” As I limped to get my refreshments, the pain increased. Hours after the race, I could barely walk. What did I do differently? After several hours, it finally occurred to me that I never stretched. But why?

I guess I figured that stretching might hurt more. How dumb is that?!

Fast forward 3 days post race, and my right leg was still causing me some issues. I was sitting in a conference and decided to simply stretch my leg. Oof! That hurt! Yet, i could tell that it was working.

Ironically, while in that same conference, the topic being discussed was way over my head. It was an information overload!

I sat there thinking, “This info is causing my head to hurt.” But why? Because it was a topic I am unfamiliar with.  Bottom line, I was being stretched!

While I am not an expert on the subject matter I was learning, the stretching will make me better. And, just like the conference, a little stretching goes a long way.

As of this blog, my leg is already feeling better.

Stretch. Go make a difference.  Always run by faith.

Dude, Where’s My Remote?

“Where’s the remote?” We’ve all heard that. We’ve all lost that. You search everywhere and everything. You call your family search party and hunt! But is there something else you can do?

The other day, my daughter lost a remote to something that controls a  special light in her bedroom. It’s one of those remotes that, if it is lost, is a lost cause.

She was getting very frustrated. My wife joined the search party. The few minutes turned to a few more minutes. I could hear their frustration about “something” from upstairs.

As I walked into the room, I could feel the frustration. I was given an immediate invite to “the party” and joined in on the hunt.

“Can we pray about this for a moment?” I asked. I wasn’t trying to come across as arrogant. I have learned from too many other “search parties” that praying first is the best option.

After a brief prayer of, “Lord, give us some help. Show us where this remote is. In Jesus name. Amen”.  We began the search.

After about 10 minutes of looking what felt like everywhere, I reached into a box on a top shelf, and boom there it was. It was a box I had moved around once or twice before. But this time, I actually put my hand into the box, “Just to rule it out:. Well, that was exactly what needed to be done. Search party called off! Remote found

1 Little Scream. 1 Major Distraction.

19,500 people in one stadium to watch an NBA game.  Yet, everyone is talking about 1 fan. 1 fan with a voice that caused one of the biggest distractions in Sports History.

The Toronto Raptors hosted the Chicago Bulls for a shot at the playoffs.  The Raptors had home court advantage and a 19 point lead in the 3rd quarter.  It looked bleak for the Bulls.

The stadium was sold out. Fans were loud, knowing their team was on the brink of moving into the playoffs. Yet, it was one 9-year-old fan, Diar, who caused the biggest roar of them all!

Diar, the daughter of Bulls star DeMar DeRozan, was sitting courtside cheering for her daddy.  Every time the Raptors attempted a free throw, just before the ball left the shooters hand, Diar screamed to distract the trained, professional basketball players. C’mon, can 1 kid out of 19,500 screaming fans make that big of a difference? Yup!

As the lead got smaller, Diars’ screams got louder. Eventually, that 19-point lead evaporated, and the Bulls pulled in front for good. Final score Bulls 109, Raptors 105.

Did Diar’s distracting scream make a difference? The stats don’t lie. Toronto went 18 for 36 from the line. They missed 50% of their free throws.  Chicago won the game and eliminated Toronto from the playoffs.

Out of the 19,500 things that happen in your daily life, what “one little scream” is causing “one major  distraction”?

Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.
Proverbs 4:25

Stop the distractions. Keep making a difference.  Always run by faith.

Jesus Understands

Ever feel like nobody understands you? That you’re alone? Perhaps you’re familiar with the story of Jesus. Let me tell you, He understands you.

Jesus walked the earth as both God, and Man. Which means He had emotions. He felt pain. He understands.

On Thursday, at the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is agonizing over what lies ahead. In fact, check out the detail and gravity of this moment that the gospel of Luke records: “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” Luke 22:44 Have you ever faced a gut-wrenching life circumstance? This is the emotion that Jesus is facing and the anguish of what lies ahead.

I want to make this as real possible and put ourselves into the story. Often times, we can hear a story so often, we become numb to it. Do you think it’s possible that even though Jesus would physically suffer and die that he was foreshadowing anguish over something else? I want to throw out a few possibilities:

I’d think that his primary emotion would’ve been fear. When someone signs up for the military, what’s the one thing everyone always talks about? Boot camp! You know it’s NOT going to be easy! You know what’s coming. And, like all Jews at that time, Jesus knew what He was signing up for when he was facing Crucifixion.

First, the whips that tore the flesh. Then, carrying your own cross. And, there’s the crucifixion itself. You hang there until your legs can no longer support you, which causes you not to be able to breathe, which leads to death by asphyxiation.  Just talking about is terrifying.

That’s the physical pain, but what about the spiritual pain?  This is what Jesus  references as they arrived  at Gethsemane…  He told them, “My soul is  crushed  with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Mark 14: 34

Because of our humanness it’s impossible to be free of all fear and anxiety. It’s a normal response to any threat or danger. But Jesus didn’t allow his fears to turn him away from his passion and death. Instead, he made the decision with seven simple words: “Not my will, but yours be done!

The second emotion Jesus experienced was loneliness. Loneliness is a pain that too many people face in our world. It’s a soul crushing kind of pain of its own. Is there a greater pain than we could feel than being alone? Jesus felt that kind of pain. And, perhaps this was the greatest pain Jesus would feel.

What did it mean to be abandoned and alone – not God turning his back on Jesus – but Jesus willingly going through the ultimate pain of dying. Our creeds state, that “Jesus descended into hell”. But what is hell? Hell is the separation from   God.   Is   that   what   Jesus   would   ultimately   feel   –   on   our   behalf? Separation from the Father and Spirit in his death? Imagine the feeling of complete   loneliness.   No   sound.   No   emotion.   Complete   darkness.   An existence void of life and consciousness of it and an absence of God.

What do you do when you’re lonely? You reach out to a friend. I remember my college girlfriend dumped me. I was heartbroken, so I called a friend and said, “can I just come over and hang out?” I didn’t want to face suffering alone. Maybe you, or a friend, has had a friend go through treatment or grief, and you just sat with them so they weren’t alone.

Jesus asked his close friends Peter, James, and John to go with him into the garden, keep watch and pray with him.  But every time he went to them, what were they doing? They were sleeping. He suffered alone. It shows Jesus understands loneliness. Ended Friendships. Family strife. Marriages broken.

This helps us see how Jesus dealt with his feelings of loneliness, especially during the agony in the garden. It also shows that Loneliness is not a disease or a disorder. It’s painful and has to be endured. Jesus shared—and understands—our pain. He’s a suffering Savior.

The third source of agony might surprise you. Is it possible that Jesus felt a sense of failure?  With a few exceptions, he’d been unable to convince the Jewish religious leaders that he was the long-awaited Messiah. He also knew that the common people who loved being around him, who learned from him, marveled at the miracles and waved palm branches, would soon yell “Crucify him!” And worst of all, even his closest friends, the disciples, would abandon him in the end.

Again, isn’t this us? We work so hard and put our best efforts into a class or job, only to see it fail or be rejected. You’re no longer needed. We’re downsizing. We’re moving in another directionWhat did I do to deserve this?  As a parent, you might feel like you’ve failed in some way if your child gets into trouble, or falls into an addiction. Or, you’ve shared your faith with someone, only to have them say, “eh no thanks.” Situations like this make you feel helpless. I tried, but I failed.

Jesus in his present humanness was afraid, lonely, and defeated. All of this is happening with Jesus, and remember what the disciples are doing? Snoring!  Now to cut ‘em some slack, this was at night. I’m not a night owl, myself. So if my boss called a midnight meeting, I’d have a hard time stayin’ awake, too. Add to the fact that they just had a huge meal with 3 cups of wine…just sayin’.

The disciples abandoned Jesus that Thursday night because their own human weakness took over. Yet, salvation is accomplished for those who are asleep, by Jesus alone.  Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:37-38

The disciples were asleep because they didn’t feel the weight of their sins let alone the sins of the world that Jesus was bearing. It’s true for us, too.

The night before Jesus died, He pleaded with his Father, “Let this cup pass from me.”  He’s fully human yet fully God, and He shows the depth of the sacrifice, with God’s divine love in that prayer. All while facing fear, loneliness and defeat…and a feeling of being separated from his Father.

Jesus knew that physical death was ahead. And, more importantly, he knew the weight of the world’s sin was ahead. But, Jesus my Jesus, your Jesus, didn’t back down. He completely submitted to His Father’s will.

I remember being bedside when my sister was sick with a disease. I prayed, “not my will, Lord, but yours be done.” It’s hard submitting to the Father’s will. And, she passed. Yet, I felt a peace and trust that I can’t explain to be able to just keep moving forward. I’m sure you’ve had your own experience, too. It was a tiny glimpse of what Jesus endured on the journey to the cross.

What happened at the Cross is that God, in the person of Jesus, embraced us. God is personal. He isn’t a theory. He’s not some distant being who doesn’t care. He is not an angry judge eagerly waiting to drop his gavel because He is out to get us. God is for us. And in Jesus, God became a full participant   as   one   of   us   –   was   crushed   for   our   rebellion   –   and   did   it because we are worth it.

There’s a great line in a Zach Williams song, “He’s not sittin there shakin’ his head, writin you off, leavin’ the lost, wishin’ He’d never went to that cross. There’s only love in the Heart Of God.” He came because he loved us. Because He loves YOU!

If you’ve ever felt stuck in some kind of mess in your life, or maybe you are now, you just want someone to give you the key to unlock you from the handcuffs. “I’m sick of the drink”, “I’m sick of going to that website”, “I’m tired of being the Gossip”, “I’m tired of being labeled the mean girl”. Through the Cross, Jesus holds the keys, not because he’s angry, but because He loves you!

That’s John 3:16, “God so loved the world He gave His one and only son”. God loves the world. He loves those who don’t go church. He loves those who yell, “Crucify Him!”

Jesus, in his humanness, was in anguish because He was afraid, lonely, and felt defeated. But now, He’s telling you to rise…and inviting you into a life with him.

It’s Friday. Sunday’s coming!

Jesus understands. Go make a difference. Always Run by Faith.

That Poor Lady, Was Rich

It was Feb 21, 1990 at The Grammy’s, the highest award for the Music Industry. Everyone was waiting for the winner of “Best New Artist”. It went to a group who put on some major dance moves, and they sold millions of records and scored 3 #1 songs. 41 weeks in the top 10, and 7 of those at #1. They became famous…and infamous. Let me explain.

About 5 months before the Grammy’s, at one of their concerts, their song track skipped. The Audience didn’t think much of it, until Rob ran off the stage. 10 months after winning that Best New Artist Grammy, their producer shared more about that record skipping event, and eventually, he exposed that Milli Vanilli NEVER sang a note on their record. They lip-synced every single song. The gave back their Grammy. And the 6 million who bought the Milli Vanilli CD, could return it, and get their money back.

In Mark, Chapter 12, there’s a story that you probably thought you knew everything about, but like Milli Vanilli, there’s more to it.  It’s sometimes called the widow’s mite, or “the widow’s offering”.

She’s the one who put her last two copper coins into the offering box. It was all she had to live on, and Jesus praises her for her faith, as she was trusting God to provide despite her bank account. Reminding us that we, too, should be more generous, and God will bless us like that sweet woman. Right? Well, like lip-syncing, not quite.

The widow comes into the temple, and Jesus takes the time to bring some perspective to teach the disciples by giving perspective of not just sacrificial giving, but she, like the record track that skipped, exposed something bigger: a Temple system that is broken.

It IS true that she gave her only remaining coins. But the REAL story is that the lip-syncing filthy, corrupt temple system drove her to the point of only HAVING two copper coins (Mark 12:42)!

So, like the producer who blew the cover on Milli Vanilli, I see Jesus getting fired up over this teaching moment as He exposes the corruption and oppression of these religious dudes. Don’t get me wrong, this is sacrificial giving—she gave ALL she had! But, something had to change! The temple system was corrupt. These leaders were lip-syncing their faith.

Are you loving people with the heart of God? Or, is it more like a Milli Vanilli lip-sync concert? This is between you and God. We are called to strive for actions that give us peace, and serve God the way He wants to be served, and give as God wants us to give. Jesus loves the lost, the broken, the marginalized. He’s with those on the other side of the line and calls us to do the same.

Don’t lip-sync. Go make a difference. Always Run by faith!

The Worst Vacation Souvenir, Ever!

Recently, I was in Florida for a wedding. It was wonderful to run some early morning miles, soak up some sun, and sit by the water, I just wish I knew more about one tiny issue.

The issue is a little bug that people call “no-see-ums”. Why? Because you can’t see them, but they sure see YOU!

Apparently, they are small and have a big appetite for exposed skin. (Like my legs!)

OH MY WORD, do these bites itch! I’ve been putting anti-itch cream on, and it does help. But they itch like poison ivy!

Here’s the lesson I’ve learned. While running, I was on the lookout for big things like gators in the pond, snakes, and getting pooped on by birds. I was never prepared for no-see-ums.

Many times, we’re on the lookout for the big, dangerous things in life. But, we often miss those small things that don’t seem like a big deal. But, if you don’t pay attention, they’ll bite ya!

Is there something in your life that’s currently a ‘no-see-um’?

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8 NIV

Avoid no-see-ums. Go make a difference. Always run by faith. Oh, and I’d love for you to subscribe for more encouragement!
